Technical Questions (10)

Detailing is much more than just a wash and a valet. Special attention is given to the whole of the car including the engine bay, air vents and door shuts, paint correction/protection, machine polishing, alloy wheel and glass protection.

As well as detergents and substances being quite aggressive, the rotating rollers will do more harm than good to your paintwork, this is because car manufactures now have to use water based paints because of environmental demands and are prone to fading and oxidisation. Light scratches and swirl marks can also result in using an automatic car wash.

A polish will behave as a moisturiser to your paintwork. Polish enriches the colour and lustre of the paint and will last between 2-3 weeks depending on weather demands. A wax is a protectant and will add a deep shine a glow and provide a protective barrier by sealing the paintwork which will give you 6-8 moths protection.

Yes Pure Diamond Valeting can cater for any paintwork problem, depending on how neglected the paintwork has been and whether it requires a single, double or even 3 stage machine polish, you can rest assured your vehicle will be in safe hands and paintwork back to looking brand new.

In all cases the choice of valet is entirely up to the customer. With our extensive knowledge we can provide assitance with which valet bests suits your vehicle. Help with choosing your valet would best be done on inspection of the vehicle.

  • If the vehicle has never seen a coat of polish in its lifetime then a paint restoration job would be ideal, this involves the paintwork being machined polished to bring it back to looking new.
  • If the vehicle is rarely washed/cleaned/polished you may want to think about having a more extensive detailed valet for example the Gold or Diamond.
  • If the vehicle is washed weekly/monthly and kept in reasonable condition then your best bet would be to have a standard full valet and polish.
  • If the vehicle gets valeted on a regular basis or has just been protected and needs topping up then the mini top up or winter valet would best suit.

Swirl marks are a collection of light scratches in the surface of the paintwork which look like spider web patterns which are visible in direct sunlight, they can make your paintwork appear tired, faded and dull.

Swirl marks are caused by abrasive washing techniques such as automatic car washes, brushes at a car wash and sponges which move grit and dirt around the paint.

The Interior Valet

To clean the interior of your car, you’ll need quite a few things. A powerful vacuum is vital, as well as vacuum attachments to allow you to clean in tight spaces. You’ll also need carpet shampoo to clean the dirt from your carpets and mats.

The interior of your car requires several steps. For instance, you will need to clean the windows with a quality glass cleaner, as well as a buffing cloth or towel. The vinyl and plastic in your interior should be cleaned with a special vinyl and plastic cleaner.

If there are stains in your interior, you will need to use a general purpose cleaner detergent and water to remove them. You will also need detailing tools such as a scrubbing-brush and a detailing brush for vents.

Finally, if you have leather upholstery, you will need to clean it properly, using a high-quality leather cleaner and a leather upholstery brush.

Washing your car?

The first step is to clean the exterior of your car. Here, you will need a quality wash mitt to help apply water and shampoo to your car. When choosing a wash mitt, opt for one made of real wool. They are the softest option available (so you do not scratch the finish), and they can also hold quite a bit of water and shampoo.

One important note here is to wash your car using a two-bucket system. One bucket should hold your water and shampoo, while the other should hold clean water for rinsing. Bucket guards should also be used. These are placed at the bottom of a bucket, preventing your wash mitt from carrying dirt and debris back onto your car.

It’s also important that you use a quality car shampoo, Preferably one that has a carnauba wax in it to give a real deep shine. While you can save a bit of money with “bargain brands”, they lack the performance and protection afforded by high-end products.

Also, make sure that you have a good drying towel. A microfiber towel is the best solution as they can absorb much more water than a PVA chamois.

The Exterior Valet

The exterior can involve polishing, machine polishing, waxing and even protection to the paint aswell as cleaning the other various bits on the car. The wheels need to be cleaned and shined and the tyres need to be dressed with a tyre shine that gives a long-lasting shine and one that ideally repels water. Glass needs to be cleaned and all exterior plastics need to be shined as they can be prone to fading. Finally the paintwork can either be polished or waxed by hand or machine, depending on what condition the paintwork is in. It may need contamination removal before hand, including tar and fallout which can be removed with a clay bar.

Polishing will greatly enhance surface gloss in readiness for a sealant or wax. Will also remove sub-surface paint defects.

Wax is a protectant and will help keep the “freshly polished” look to your car’s paint. A good wax should be made of natural ingredients, such as carnauba wax.

Paint Sealants seal the paint from the harsh environment. Where wax is a natural substance, sealants are synthetic waxes that are formulated for long-lasting and protective qualities. They contain polymers or acrylic compounds that are tough to beat and give exceptional gloss.
